Hear New Sound: Silversun Pickups' "Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings)"

Silverlake nu-gazers Silversun Pickups broke onto the scene in 2006 with their debut Carnavas not being taken very seriously by critics with an insurmountable amount of cynicism, writing them off as Smashing Pumpkins wannabes. Six years later, the Los Angeles-based quartet has proved them all right to a certain extent: Like the Pumpkins, they've carved out their own niche over the years and experienced a greater level of success and anticipation leading up to each new release, with their third LP Neck of the Woods arriving May 8th on Dangerbird Records. This time around, the Pickups have teamed up in the studio with mega alt-rock producer Jacknife Lee (R.E.M., Weezer) whose impact is immediately felt in the album's first single "Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings.)" It's a glittery, atmospheric listen that cracks open a dark M83-esque night sky using a giant shoegaze soundscape as its backdrop, boding well for the band much like it did for fellow fuzz-rock revivalists The Pains of Being Pure at Heart last year when they took a chance on a hit-making producer. You won't have to repeat the song title three times while looking in a mirror to hear it -- "Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings)" is below...
