Since storming onto the scene a few years ago,
Japandroids have made a fury of fuzzy-sounding guitar licks and high-impact drumming that scorches through speakers their calling card. Just last week, they punctuated that point with
"The House That Heaven Built", the fiery anthem and
Recommended Listen first single off their sophomore LP
Celebration Rock. The album doesn't arrive until June 5th on Polyvinyl Records, but a new 7" of the track will be released on May 15th with a B-side perk in a cover of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' "Jack the Ripper." Unlike original takes by the noise-punk Canucks, the Vancouver duo displays some darker restraint in reverb this time around, which isn't the first time Japandroids have put this to practice. "The House That Heaven Built" 7" is the conclusion of a four-part singles series that began in the summer of 2010 with
"Younger Us" and saw them tackle
Big Black,
PJ Harvey and
X in a similar fashion. Collect 'em all, starting with "Jack the Ripper" below...
