Hear New Sound: VÅR's "In Your Arms (Final Fantasy)"

If you're a side-project looking to change your band's name because there's already another band out there who've found some success with it, this must be the week do so. On the heels of Beach Fossils offshoot formerly spelled as "DIVE" now going by DIIV, Iceage frontman Elias Ronnenfelt's experimental lo-fi electronic project War announced today that they'll be recording under the moniker of VÅR from here on out. In an e-mail exchange between he and Loke Rahbek with NPR, they state the change comes about at the objection of a similarly-named band (AS is assuming its a certain '60s funk act.) Unlike Z. Cole Smiths's dismissal of a name's significance however, VÅR's shift does has some for the Danish duo: VÅR (pronounced like "War") is the Danish word for "spring" while the announcement coincides with the May 5th anniversary of the end of Nazi occupation in Denmark. To usher in the change, VÅR is offering up "In Your Arms (Final Fantasy,) a track previously only available on Sacred Bones' Record Store Day-exclusive 12" Todo Muere Volume 2. Filled with bright synths and an optimistically romantic chorus from Ronnenfalt, it plants the seeds of VÅR's new era -- Set to bloom next spring in the form of a full-length. Hold it close below...
