Hear New Sound: Passion Pit's "I'll Be Alright"

I've rarely made habit of paying much attention to Passion Pit's underlying lyrical themes considering the music is so uplifting and ready to make listeners dance, the last thing you might expect to hear from frontman Michael Angelakos' lips would be a dark, autobiographical account about pill-popping and alcohol abuse. In a recent interview with Pitchfork, the frontman hinted that a sadder side of him brought on by "a really rough year" inspired the shape of the Boston indie pop band's highly anticipated sophomore follow-up Gossamer, due out July 24th on Capital Records. What's most surprising about the track in question, "I'll Be Alright," is that even when confronting a heavy subject head on, Passion Pit successfully candy-coat it with amazingly awesome hyper-speed rhythms and twitchy production that sounds like the audible representation of Angelakos' brainwaves during his cloudy-minded days. Lead single "Take A Walk" was an subtle transition of a first impression, but on "I'll Be Alright," it's nice to hear Passion Pit digging beneath the surface level of their brand of electro-pop, making a lucid connection between their emotions and the more adventurous side of their sound. Everything works out below...
