Hear New Sound: California X's "Spider X"

The last time AwkwardSound checked in with Amherst, MA mud punks and BUZZSound alumni California X, the trio were sending out feelers into cyberspace with an unmastered rendition of the grungy head dive "Pond Rot" off their forthcoming debut. Since then, they've hashed out the details of that LP. The self-titled effort will arrive on January 15th on the great Don Giovanni Records, in turn making them labelmates with the likes of some like-minded noisemakers such as Screaming Females, Pregnant and Waxahatchee. Admirably astute yet somewhat unfairly, the trio's material so far has been lumped into label of being the grungy heir apparent to the five college area's legendary alt scene pride Dinosaur Jr., and the fact that Spider X is produced by venerable Baystate producer Justin Pizzoferrato (Dino Jr.'s I Bet On Sky and Farm, Sonic Youth's The Eternal and basically any project dealing with Thurston Moore, Mascis and a slew of other scene guitar slingers) brings those observations to the forefront. "Spider X," the newest listen off the LP might be trying to convey different opinions, however, as California X hide away their sludgy tendencies and instead push the guitar pedals to the metal on this onslaught of heavy riffage. Get tangled up in "Spider X"'s web below...
