Sound Bites: LUST FOR YOUTH, Paul Banks and Screaming Females

Chelsea Wolfe's "Flatlands (LUST FOR YOUTH Remix)"

Chelsea Wolfe scaled back her morbid orchestral soundscapes on 2012's quiet effort Unknown Rooms: A Collection Of Acoustic Songs, but Swedish cold pop makers LUST FOR YOUTH have reimagined her natural dark hues into something entirely synthetic with a remix of album cut "Flatlands." The track comes courtesy of Sacred Bones, with no physical release currently attached to it, although AS wouldn't mind hearing LUST FOR YOUTH rework more of their dark-minded contemporaries somber material to make for a stellar goth pop dance floor playlist.

Paul Banks' Everybody On My Dick Like They Supposed to Be Mixtape

Many peg Paul Banks as a brooding soul thanks to his penchant for the color black and morbid themes in both his work as Interpol frontman and solo artist, but read between the lines and you'll find a healthy dose of wry sarcasm and dark comedy amidst all the torturous love songs. That's probably the point Banks is trying to hit home with on the release of a new rap mixtape entitled Everybody On My Dick Like They Supposed to Be, which boasts appearances from El-P, Odd Future's Mike G and Talib Kweli. The biggest surprise isn't even so much that it's a rap mixtape or the absurd title, but rather how well these rhymers fit in with a manipulated form of Banks' mechanical atmospheric lurk.

Screaming Females' "Poison Arrow"

Despite having released one of 2012's 25 Best Albums here on AS with Ugly, Screaming Females' incessant touring days have been mostly sidelined over the past year while frontwoman Marissa Paternoster is on the mend from something pretty painful called "thoracic outlet syndrome." In the meantime, the Jersey punk trio have still been keeping busy at home and have recorded a brand new cassette-only release entitled Chalk Tapes. "Poison Arrow" is our first preview, a listen that steps away from their epic guitar shredding in favor of sunless and humble post-punk à la Wire, Crisis and almost-tourmates Ceremony. Chalk Tapes arrives February 10th on Don Giovanni.
