Song Review: Tyler, the Creator's "Domo 23"

"Talking about rape and cutting bodies up, it just doesn't interest me anymore... What interests me is making weird hippie music for people to get high to. With Wolf, I'll brag a little more, talk about money and buying shit. But not like any other rapper, I'll be a smart-ass about it,” the always-divisive Tyler, the Creator told SPIN all the way back in 2011 of his forthcoming third LP Wolf, due out April 2nd on Odd Future / XL Records. As its first single, “Domo 23” is an obligatory rapper Status Update that catches listeners up to speed with how he's handling fame and fortune since Goblin made him even more successful, and half-true to his word, the de facto Odd Future leader does it all with a cocky punk attitude just daring you to slap it away from him. And then there's the other half of the story that's a bit of a headscratcher, as Tyler isn't doing himself any favors here to back off concerns and criticisms that the hip-hop collective's success came at the expense of shock value lyrics meant to inspire tongue-in-cheek reflections about homophobia and misogyny, but not necessarily doing a great job getting the sarcasm across ("So, a couple f**s threw a little hissfit..." and the countless invites to "suck my d**k" are among "Domo 23"'s awfully sharp edges.) But hey, openly bisexual Odd Future member Frank Ocean provides an outro in its video version, so it's all good, right? C'mon, maaaaan... He's not making it easy to defend him here, but at least getting away from Goblin's morbid beats in favor of that freaky psychedelic dance banger energy like a cartoon version of the Pharcyde at least suggests that's how you tell when he's joking.
