Sound Bites: Beach Fossils, Kurt Vile and Youth Lagoon

Beach Fossils' Clash the Truth

Beach Fossils' sophomore effort Clash the Truth arrives next Tuesday on Captured Tracks, but the HypeMachine has made it available to stream one week before its shelf release. AS has already brought you early previews in "Careless," "Shallow" and "Generational Synthetic," but taking it in as a whole, it feels like Dustin Payseur's early warnings of making a "noisy" return have been subdued by the Brooklyn guitar-pop quartet's formulaic soft sparkle and perhaps the loss of Zachary Cole Smith to DIIV.

Kurt Vile's "Wakin On a Pretty Day"

For the second time in the past two weeks, AwkwardSound is going to admit a past wrong doing and apology. This time, it's to Pennysylvanian jammer Kurt Vile, whose 2010 release Smoke Ring for My Halo got unjustly panned over a weakly conceived Dylan comparison. If AS wants to redeem itself, Vile is going to make it work for it, as he's unleashing a double album entitled Wakin On a Pretty Daze on April 9th via Matador. Its 9-minute-long first single (below) stretches Vile's humble strumming out from comfort food to a full course meal of simple songwriting done right. The childish prodigy will also kickstart a North American tour in April, beginning with two appearances at Coachella. If numbers mean anything to you, Mr. Vile, change that 54 to an 84...

Youth Lagoon's "Mute"

AS has to admit, it was a bit hesitant to embrace the hi-fi fill and pronounced production brought to the forefront by "Dropla," the first listen off ex-bedroom pop BUZZSound alum Youth Lagoon's sophomore effort Wondrous Bughouse, due out March 5th on Fat Possum. After spending some time with its latest expanded listen "Mute," the gooey guitar swerves and smudged psychedelia of the indie rock auteur's new style reconstruct Trevor Powers' hazy daydreams more vividly and wild. In related news, he'll be bringing Youth Lagoon out on the road much longer than originally thought, as they've added new dates to their forthcoming spring tour across the States.
