Sound Bites: Cold Cave, Dinosaur Jr. and Savages

Cold Cave's "People Are Poison"

Ahead of his full band reboot, Cold Cave mastermind Wes Eisold has been tossing out new ideas on his own from his bedroom studio with a series of new EPs that began to trickle out late last year. The latest, Oceans With No End, features two brand new tracks (which I guess just makes it a double A-side single?) with its Recommended punkified dark wave title track previewed back in February and now its flipside, “People Are Poison.” Where as the former was built around single-handing a guitar with the other on his synth toys, “People Are Poison” channels more electricity into Eisold's space with a snarling attitude that proudly dons his Jesus and Mary Chain. Oceans With No End is available as of today via Deathwish Inc.

Dinosaur Jr.'s "Entertainment" (Phoenix cover)

Dinosaur Jr. have no trouble tackling other band’s songs who’ve no relationship to their dense reverb sound and repossessing it as their own (just ask the Cure) so it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that J Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph have given Phoenix’s showbizzy new single “Entertainment” a gorgeously loud redux ahead of the release of the French pop heavyweights forthcoming festival pleaser Bankrupt!. Curious as to how the “remix” came about? Head over to SPIN, where the band’s frontman Thomas Mars talks about being a fan of the alt-rock luminaries since discovering them back in ’91. If AS had to pick one, it’d favor Mascis and company for carrying the emotional weight of the track much better atop a heavy slush of slow distortion...

Savages' "She Will"

Rising UK post-punk quartet Savages began to rustle up head-turning momentum last autumn during their first stateside visit at CMJ, and last week, they delivered another round of acclaimed face-melting live appearances at SXSW. It only makes sense that the darkly laced Brits have now aligned themselves with one of the leading indie labels for their debut album, as Matador Records has announced they will release Silence Yourself on May 7th as a joint effort with Pop Noir. "She Will" is the first single off the LP, a straight-forward yet scathing unshackling of unwinding guitars and sinister heroics from frontwoman Jennhy Beth. Savages will again return to the U.S. next month for this year's Coachella.
