Hear New Sound: Dead Trend's "Not My Future"

If you're going to cop Black Flag's Friz Quadrata as your own, you better know your shit and do their legacy justice (although, that's not such a difficult task these days, when you consider recent transpirings.) Portland, ME hardcore punks Dead Trend are legit historians on the matter, with drummer Michael Fournier penning the 33 1/3 Series book on the Minutemen's Double Nickels On the Dime and once teaching a History of Punk Rock class at Tufts, while frontman Jay Grant knows the world of music from all angles, having ran the entire station at WMEB at the University of Maine. On May 7th, the former hardcore fiction band-turned-Mike-Watt-approved-live punk players release their debut album False Positive on Cabildo, and in the coming weeks, they're going to share five new singles off it until its due date. "Not My Future" is the first of them, a minute-long tirade against Reaganomics and flipping off the family man just as Rollins and MacKaye did three decades ago, fulfilling a healthy amount of irony in the song title without messing too much with the era's raw three-chord intensity.
