Sound Bites: Charli XCX, Drake and Thundercat

Charli XCX's "What I Like (Remix)" (feat. Danny Brown)

This week, AwkwardSound dubbed True Romance, Charli XCX's debut long play of bubblegummy electronic confections, a Recommended Listen. Jumping in on the hype around the UK's freshly-coronated goth-pop princess is fellow Internet-made superstar Danny Brown who appears on a brand new remix of the album's latest single "What I Like." The suggestive listen stays true to its original trap-rave mixings, but Brown's mouthy rhymes walking in on Charli's afternoon delight session mid-way through dial the kinky fun up to 11.

Drake's "Girls Love Beyoncé" (feat. James Fauntleroy)

Drake has dropped some late night pillow talk alongside a flattering wink to the queen bee of modern R&B-pop in his new track “Girls Love Beyoncé.” There’s no word yet from Camp OVO whether or not the latest 40-produced listen will be appearing on Drizzy’s forthcoming summer effort Nothing Was the Same, but the single’s geometrically-enhanced cover keeps in theme with the one seen on “5am In Toronto,” so it's likely. While that previous peak into LP 3 had the hip-hop all-star pounding a confrontational fist in your face, “Girls Love Beyoncé” finds Drake in a state of ease rap-singing about new found monogamy and friendship as Timberlake associate James Fauntleroy croons a familiar Destiny's Child hit during his guest spot.

Thundercat's "Heartbreaks + Setbacks"

Bass-gifted producing pro Stephen Bruner a.k.a. Thundercat has a new album called Apocalypse that's set to arrive on July 9th through Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label. In the past, he and his fellow Los Angeles experimental sound-bender have exchanged talents on each others' tracks, but with his sophomore effort, FlyLo will be full-on executive producing the entire thing. "Heartbreaks + Setbacks" is its melodious first helping of space-stuttering crybaby R&B which was co-written by Steven Ellison himself alongside Brainfeeder stablemate Mono/Poly. Thundercat and his boss will be touring across the States over the course of the next two months as well.
