Hear New Sound: Beck's "I Won't Be Long"

Alt-rock lifer Beck has yet to detail either of his two planned full-lengths (one acoustic and the other, who knows what) due out later this year, but the enigmatic songwriter has been blindsiding listeners with one-off singles in the meantime. On the heels of the most recent listen, the washed out Panda Bear-sounding affair, “Defriended,” Beck has now unveiled the cool-tempoed guitar craft and pastel echoes of “I Won’t Be Long," and just as AS politely criticized on "Defriended," the style strikes a reductive nature with influence from indie rock's young blood (thinking some cold wave along the patterns of Abe Vigoda's Crush or Deerhunter's dreamier pre-Monomania outputs.) The track itself is being physically released as a 12” single with a 14-minute-long remix B-side in tow through Beck's designated website for it (there's also one for anyone who wants to scoop up “Defriended” for the keeping as well.) In the meantime, Beck soon heads out east for a string of tour dates, including a headlining slot at this year's Newport Folk Festival, so maybe we'll just have to wait and see what those shows involve in order to pass proper judgement on whether his new material continues to simply cull from smaller talents' big ideas. "I Won't Be Long" awaits shortly hereafter...
