Schecter OMEN‌-6

Pros:

  • Powerful Sound
  • Great Sustain
  • Dark, Metal themed design

Cons:

  • Beware dents and scratches
  • Heavy tone bias

Schecter has proven time and again that they have what it takes to make some of the most amazing guitars out there. With their collections of exemplary custom and mass produced instruments, it is not surprising that I, like so many other people, have set a high bar for each one of their guitars. So let us take a look at the Schecter Omen-6, the more affordable of the Schecter guitars, and see how it lives up to the bar.

Body Quality

The body of the guitar is designed after the ever famous Stratocaster shape. This gives the guitar a classic look, while also allowing for a little bit of edge in the way it is perceived. Still, while the stratocaster features are present in the instrument, the guitar retains its own personality by adopting a more slender, rounded design that feels unique. The solid colour of the instrument is impressive to the eye, while the binding on the edges of the guitar brings out the character even more.

The body of the guitar is built out of basswood. This tonewood is known for a number of qualities, the number one favorite of the manufacturers’ being the cheapness of it. My personal favorite is the lightweight nature of the hardwood, allowing you to play the guitar without struggling too much. The tone of the guitar is also well impacted by the tonewood producing a deeper, warmer sound. The only problem with the tonewood is the fact that it dents and scratches so easily. An easy problem to avoid, to be honest. Just don’t swing your guitar around too much. And get a gig bag.

The neck of the guitar is made of maple. This hardwood has an amazing quality of being incredibly sturdy, making it one of the perfect hardwoods for the neck of any guitar. The coloring and grain of the neck also provides a nice contrast to the body and a beautiful overall design choice. The fretboard of the guitar is made of rosewood, which is always a nice choice among guitars.

Hardware

The bridge of the guitar is of the  tune-o-matic persuasion with a Schecter string-thru body tail. This results in the guitar having some great actions, added string tension and the manufacturer claims extra sustain, but I don’t see it.

The nut of the guitar is made of synthetic material. This material does a fairly decent job of producing a clean sound, highly acceptable.

The guitar has a schecter designed tuning machine, which does a great job doing its job. The tuning stability on the guitar is rather good, and the design is very pleasant to the eyes.

Electronics

The guitar comes equipped with a dual humbucker setup. The two Schecter Diamond Plus humbuckers are rather well known and loved among the musical crowd. They produce a powerful sound and are versatile enough, if a little on the heavy side. The humbuckers also have a tendency to stay strong and healthy for a long time. Definitely a great pick of stock pickups.

The controls on the guitar are fairly simplistic, with two knobs, one for volume the other for tone, and a switch to play around with pickup configuration.

Schecter OMEN‌-6 Sound

The guitar has a heavy, clean, bass biased sound which can sound clean and pure if needed. Sustain is something this guitar will never struggle with, while the powerful output will keep turning heads for years to come. The best part of it is the fact that the pickups do a great job of picking up nuanced sound. Overall, a lovely sound.

Conclusion

I would highly recommend this guitar, especially when compared to some of the others in the price range. While it is slightly more expensive than most affordable guitars, the extra dollar will be well worth the sound you get out of it.
