The instruments from the list above are the most reliable and popular ones in today’s reality. Hope you decided on which one to buy. But just in case, I would like to give you some general information about ukuleles, because in my opinion, every musician should be able to distinguish a good instrument from the crappy one, know how it is made in general and stuff like that.

Well firstly let’s describe the difference between the soprano uke and all of the others. There are four types of ukuleles. They are differentiated by their size, sound, style etc. From smallest to biggest the order will go like this: Soprano, Concert, Tenor, Baritone. You can see that soprano ukuleles are the smallest of them all. They are actually considered as the most general, traditional ukuleles, due to their original body size and structure. Soprano ukuleles are 20 inches (51 cm) long. They usually have from 12 to 15 frets. They have a relatively simple structure, plus are lighter and more compact than other types. As a downside can be considered the fact that sometimes it is difficult to play as the frets are too close – people who have larger fingers, or hands might struggle. And sometimes you might accidentally bend a string out of tune, due to the string having less tension. Generally, beginners will start out on a soprano uke because you can usually find a decently playable one for a low price. They produce the most genuine, natural, traditional sound.

The History of Ukuleles

The minute I heard uke for the first time I wanted to learn more about it. I dug deep into it history and found out how it was invented, became popular all over the world, and most of all, how it became a symbol of Hawaii.

The history of this amazing instrument dates back to the end of the 19th century.  At that time Hawaii was one of the few places that produced lot of sugar cane. The demand for workers increased a lot, as new markets opened in California. Therefore, a lot of Portuguese workers moved to Hawaii. They populated a big part of the land and finally settled down with the locals. The nation got mixed up, and as usually happens, new people bring foreign cultures. One of the main things that new Portuguese inhabitants brought to Hawaii was a musical instrument called Machete de Braga. It has four metal strings and locals loved it right away. As the time went by, they started modifying the instrument to the stage, where it can be considered as a predecessor of modern day ukulele. After that, a few famous luthiers did an outstanding job, and transformed this machete-ukulele hybrid, into Ukulele. It has never lost this original face since then. With the local population, King Kalakaua became very fond of the ukulele. He cherished local culture a lot, but also was a big fan of art, so decided to use the ukulele in royal ceremonies. After it became cool in kings’ court, it became even cooler outside of it as well. So finally, it became a symbol of Hawaii and then spread all over the world.

Conclusion

To sum up this article, I have reviewed the best soprano ukuleles that are available on the market today. Those models are the best of the best, so feel free to go and check them out. Even though, most of them look pretty similar, in reality, each one of them has something unique. Make sure the instrument fits you perfectly, in order to enjoy it at its fullest, so definitely play a few chords before you actually get one. Ukuleles are unique instrument, so if you are a beginner, do not lose motivation, but vice versa, and learn it the best you can, because the feeling that it gives you is wonderful. Its sound transfers you to a totally different reality. Its like you hear the legends of Hawaii and go on an adventure. It is definitely worth the fuss of purchase. I would like to wish you the best of luck. Hope you will find the perfect match and connect with it in the best way possible.
