A lot of people feel like the acoustic bass guitar is more of a novelty instrument than it is an actually useful one. The fact that some acoustic bass guitars look kind of outlandish, or like they could barely function, does not help this status of the instrument. Still, to all of the people who think that the acoustic bass guitar is a novelty instrument without too much use in the modern world, I would like to say check yourself, because you are about to wreck yourself. So here, to convince you, let me introduce you to the Boulder Creek EBR3-N4F, one of my favorite acoustic bass guitars.
Body Quality
The body of this bass guitar is designed with a single mission in mind, to make the bass guitar sound actually good. Which is why you have a sort of outlandish look about the guitar, one which works to the benefit both of style and sound. The body of the guitar is designed in a very recognizable and popular dreadnaught shape. This powerful sound amplification of this body shape is well known among musicians, and so is the fact that the voice of the guitar is booming. The manufacturer avoids this problem by introducing two smaller sound holes at the top left and in the side of the guitar. This allows the booming sound to be quieted down before the sound escapes the guitar.
The top of the guitar is made out of cedar, which is not a popular wood among guitars even in the price range of this one. Still the quality of resonance with the higher and mid tones that cedar produces is exceptional. The tones are bright and delightful, reminiscent of maple but still slightly softer and more expressive. The back and sides of the guitar are made out of mahogany, which results in the amplification of the low tones produced by the bass guitar. As a result the guitar has a powerful build working well with the intended sound of the instrument.
The neck of the guitar is made out of the traditional maple, which provides the instrument with a whole lot of easy-to-appreciate durability. The maple is very well known for the fact that it makes a great wood for necks, resulting in a guitar with a long lifespan without ever encountering the problem of warping, breaking or otherwise being damaged. The neck is set through the body of the guitar, as is to be expected of an acoustic bass guitar. The fretboard is made out of rosewood and is missing any frets for those of you who like playing around with their notes a little more.
Hardware
The guitar comes with a standard four-saddle, rosewood bridge. This provides the instrument with some nice action in the strings, as well as enhances the lower tones of the guitar to an incredibly attractive level.
The nut of the guitar is made out of a high quality synthetic material, which is always a great thing to hear about a guitar. This means the guitar has some nice action in the strings and will not be having any string buzz or harmony issues. The nut is durable and will last for a whole while.
The tuning machine of the guitar is handsome in design and has a chrome finish. It provides the instrument with nice string stability. This is always extremely welcome in all guitars.
Boulder Creek Bass Sound
The guitar is made to sound exceptional. The combination of the high tone resonance of the cedar with the low tone resonance presented by the mahogany produces a recognizable, lovely tone that feels unique to the Boulder Creek EBR3-N4F. The sound of the guitar is powerful and yet unbothered by any booming or noise that is typical of such large bodies. Lovely all around.
Conclusion
While the look of the Boulder Creek EBR3-N4F might feel a little outlandish to the newcomers in the business, the instrument is actually one of the best acoustic bass guitars on the market. Highly recommended for professionals and amateurs alike.
