Cordoba 15CM Concert Ukulele

Pros:

  • Good tonewood
  • Great tone
  • No tuning issues (unlike with a lot of beginner ukes)

Cons:

  • Composite nut and saddle
  • Sharp frets

Cordoba is known for good quality instruments and whether it is an acoustic guitar or a concert ukulele, they deliver on their promise of good craftsmanship and attention to detail. The 15CM is part of the 15 series which aims at creating entry-level ukuleles. Entry-level not only in price but comfort. A lot of manufacturers focus on reducing the price for their beginner ukuleles by compromising on the quality. That is quite understandable but if you are looking for something that will last you several years and be useful when you are more experienced maybe check out Cordoba 15CM Concert Ukulele.

Build

Okay, let’s talk a bit about the build of the 12Cm after all construction and tonewood are the main determinants of the sound and overall playability of your instrument. What you will see on this uke are a mahogany body and mahogany neck. Cordoba handmakes their ukes so the attention to detail and craftsmanship are pretty good. The only deviation for quality is the fret edges which are a little bit sharp (this is not a problem with all of them). The Ivoroid binding is well polished and along with a matte finish, you get a beautiful looking, elegant ukulele. The abalone-style rosette and ivoroid body are probably one of my favorite feature of this instrument. These features are rarely present in beginner/affordable ukuleles and the fact that Cordoba chose them really shows that they want to deliver on the quality.

Hardware

When it comes to hardware, Cordoba delivers on that aspect too. The rosewood bridge and fingerboard with pearl button tuning machines are well made and durable. The tuners are easy to use and keep the strings in tune. While a lot of entry-level instruments tend to have a lot of tuning issues, the 15CM avoids. While Cordoba went for some durable and long-lasting tonewood and mostly high-quality hardware, the nut and saddle are composite. While this is not the biggest issue for beginners because without an untrained ear you probably will not notice the difference, it is still not as durable as some other materials.

Cordoba 15CM Sound

Good quality mahogany body and great craftsmanship really are what makes the 15CM sound so good. The overall tone is very balanced and sweet. Apart from that, although the nut material used on this instrument is not my favorite I do not think it really affects the tone that much. As for the Aquila Nylgut 7U, they are very durable and after using them for a couple of weeks and breaking them in, you will achieve a full sound. If this is your first ukulele, you are definitely in luck because you will get an authentic concert ukulele sound.

Conclusion

There is a good reason why the 15CM is one of Cordoba’s best-selling ukuleles and why it is on our list of the best concert ukuleles. And the reason is kind of pretty obvious – this is a great ukulele. That simple! While an amazing beginner instrument that will provide all the comfort in the world to slowly get into playing, this instrument is also good enough in construction and nuanced tone to be a nice addition to an intermediate player.
