Yamaha JR2 3-4-Size Folk

Pros:

  • Comfortable
  • Compact
  • Good sound for the price

Cons:

  • Nato is not the highest quality material
  • Basic hardware

What is there to say about Yamaha that has not already been said. Saying that it is one of the most well-known and innovative manufacturers is a trite statement, saying that all of their products are top notch might be a stretch but one thing is definitely true: Yamaha always considers their clients when creating the best options for them and delivers on their promises. And JR2 ¾ definitely epitomizes Yamaha’s strive to achieve a synergy of quality and affordability.

Build

JR2 3/4 is created for anyone who is more comfortable with smaller guitars than, say, full-sized dreadnaughts or jumbos. ¾ scale makes is good fit for kids, beginners, and anyone who needs a smaller sized guitar to travel around with and use every minute of free time to practice. The top on this model is spruce, which is a great quality tonewood ideal for acoustic guitars. The back and sides are mahogany which gives this model warmer and more woody tone while the neck is nato. Nato is often referred to as “eastern mahogany”. Although a lot of people consider it to be a cheaper alternative to other woods it would be a stretch to say that nato will make a big difference in sound and tone, especially for a beginner or a kid who is just starting off playing a guitar.

Hardware

One thing I have to say is that when you are looking for a more affordable model you always have to keep in mind that there will be some things absent: if you get good quality build, you might be lacking in top-notch hardware, or maybe it is the opposite. With Yamaha JR2 ¾  you do not get as much innovation or complexity with hardware but I doubt that should be a big issue if you are looking for a basic, affordable guitar that delivers on sound. That is not to say that it does not have anything to offer. JR ¾ comes with rosewood bridge and open chrome tuner and as a bonus, you get a gig bag. A gig bag is a nice bonus if this is your first guitar or you are buying it as a gift so that you do not have to think more about that issue.

Yamaha JR2 Sound

When it comes to the sound of a particular guitar, you cannot fully depend on the hardware and tonewood, you obviously have to put something into it as well. This gets a bit tricky when you are just starting off or cannot really manage the size of a full-sized dreadnought and that is exactly why this guitar is a gem. The construction of the guitar is providing all the necessary comfort for you to give it all you can and produce the sound, with the help of the great construction, that will match any full-sized guitar. It has the volume and depth that you would not expect from a ¾ sized guitar.

Conclusion

Providing comfort, quality and sound, Yamaha JR ¾ will help you develop into a great player that might go on to new, bigger guitars but will always cherish this model as the key to success. Or maybe you already are an experienced player, then this model will be a perfect fit if you are travelling or do not have as much space, or simply want a smaller-sized guitar that will bring the sound just like any full-sized one. In any case, this model has all the basics that you will need and it comes at a much lower price that models that sound pretty much the same.
