Where does the beauty of a musical instrument lie? Is it within the muscle qualities of the instrument? Is it within the design of the instrument? Is it within its low price? Or is the beauty of the instrument located within the combination of all these qualities? A lot of people will tell you that they are too humble to assume that they know. I am not humble. I will tell you that the true inspirational beauty of an instrument lies within the combination of all these qualities. Then I will take you to take a look at the Dean Edge 6-String Bass to make my point.
Body Quality
The design of the guitar finds its roots, and its copies, within all of its brethren. I mean there are only so many bass guitar shapes that exist within the world, that can be useful to the musicians who are trying to perform. Whether it’s because there is a certain rule that says they all have to look that way, or because there is a lack of creativity in the world, I don’t know. What I do know is the shape gets a little boring. Still this guitar does a good job of having a nice, handsome twist on the traditional style. The coloring pattern assists in this twist, providing a metal look to the guitar overall.
The body of the guitar made out of basswood, which is a nice choice of tonewood for bass guitars, most of the time. After all, tonewood is known for its bass guitar enhancing qualities, such as the strong resonance of the tonewood with the bass tones of a guitar. This resonance is reminiscent of mahogany, though a little thicker, and providing less of a spike in the mid-tones of the guitar. The high tones are a little more neglected by the basswood. The tonewood is known to be rather lightweight, making it a great choice for heavier instruments, if they are weight-balanced right. The soft nature of the basswood is an unfortunate thing most musicians will have to deal with.
The neck of the guitar is made out of a multi-ply hardwood, which provides the instrument with a great level of strength of stability. While there have been some reports of a weak neck in selected models, the guitar seems to be very sturdy and strong overall, with a high resistance to warping. The neck is bolted onto the body of the instrument, which is an unfortunate detail to have in an instrument, but which keeps the guitar cheap, so there is not much I can say about it. The fretboard of the guitar is made out of rosewood.
Hardware
The guitar comes with a six-saddle, fixed bridge. It provides a good level of action in the instrument, while also supplying great string stability.
The nut of the guitar is made out of a cheap, plasticate material. This unfortunate little detail results in the guitar having some fret buzz issues, though thankfully we have a couple of humbuckers to save the day.
The tuning machine of the guitar looks rather handsome with the rest of the guitar’s design. The tuning stability of the guitar is nothing special to rave about, though it does not seem to be a problem either.
Electronics
The guitar comes with a dual pickup setup, with one of the pickups located at the bridge of the guitar while the other rests and the middle of the guitar. The two Dean Designed humbuckers provide a whole lot of output for the guitar, resulting in a powerful sound with a whole lot of character. The pickups provide a thick and strong low tone, with the mid and high tones never feeling excluded.
The guitar comes with a fairly standard set of controls. The player is provided with one master control knob, two individual tone knobs and a single blending knob.
Dean Edge 6 String Bass Sound
The guitar has the sound of an instrument that should be a little more expensive. The low tones of the bass are very well defined while the high tones feel fresh and bright. The combination of the basswood with the two powerful humbuckers results in a sound full of strength and character. The guitar is a whole lot of fun to play and has a sound that is easy to enjoy. Well fitted for progressive rock, rock and roll and especially metal.
Conclusion
The Dean Edge 6-String Electric Bass guitar was made with only one thing in mind: good sound, and it provides the sound well. The guitar is highly recommended to those of you looking for a solid sound without having to go broke.
